On Thursday, the Central Election Commission registered 23 people as presidential candidates and banned the same number of people from taking part in the polls. Of the 23 registered presidential candidates, seven were nominated by political parties, and the other 17 are self-nominated candidates.
The candidates nominated by their parties include Batkivshchyna leader Yulia Tymoshenko, Svoboda Party leader Oleh Tyahnybok, Communist Party chairman Petro Symonenko, Civil Position party leader Anatoliy Hrytsehnko, Ukrainian People's Party leader Oleksandr Klymenko, Popular Rukh of Ukraine leader Vasyl Kuibida, and leader of the Radical Party Oleh Liashko.
The self-nominees include Ukrainian businessman and Petro Poroshenko, Serhiy Tigipko and Oleh Tsariov, both of the Party of Regions, former Deputy Prime Minister Yuriy Boiko, former Head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration Mykhailo Dobkin, former First Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin, Head of the Ukrainian Jewish Congress Vadym Rabinovich, former head of the Foreign Intelligence Service Mykola Malomuzh, former Minister of Social Policy Natalia Korolevska, former head of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine Vasyl Tsushko, leader of the Right Sector Party Dmytro Yarosh, activists of Maidan doctor Olha Bohomolets and Zorian Shkiriak, ex-MP Valeriy Konovaliuk, and entrepreneurs Volodymyr Saranov and Andriy Hrynenko. The presidential elections in Ukraine have been set for May 25.
Presenting the decision by Central Electoral Commission, one of its members Igor Zhidenko noted the attempt to get the extravagantly dressed chairman deputy of Ukraine’s Internet party registered as candidate in the upcoming presidential elections could have been seen as a joke, unless somebody had paid 2.5m hryvnias for that. He sees the move as a try to discredit the whole pre-electoral procedure.
The formal reason to deny Vader the registration in the elections is provision of inappropriate data on the convention of the political force that nominated him. Darth Vader filed a document stating the party congress was on March 25 in the Odessa region, but the region’s executives didn’t confirm that, saying there was an apartment block at the given address.
The man, dressed a-la famed Star Wars character in a coat, and wearing full-fledged armor and a helmet, became well-recognized in Ukraine following a series of public performances. He once declared himself Odessa’s mayor, then attacked Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice backed by law enforcers, campaigned against illegal parking, as well as gave away salt and matches on the "Apocalypse" eve. He also suggested that ex mayor of Odessa head the planet Tatuin one day.
His real name, or better say ex name was Viktor Shevchenko, which he officially replaced with Darth Vader on March 19.
